The wave of boycotting Facebook is taking place strongly in Europe

The question is being asked by the European online community, and many people have responded with “#DeleteFacebook.”

As more people respond to the wave of Facebook deletion, the world’s leading social networking company continues to fall into crisis. The hashtag #DeleteFacebook is now trending on Twitter.

Last week, Meta, the parent company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, stated in its financial report that Facebook had lost users for the first time since its inception.

The Glommy Numbers

The number of people quitting the world’s largest social networking platform reached half a million in the last three months of 2021. The phenomenon happens mostly in Africa, Latin America, and India, and it is also the first time in Facebook’s 18-year history.

The bleak report quickly sent Meta’s stock price down 26%, or $230 billion of the internet company’s market worth. According to Bloomberg, CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s fortune will drop by around $24 billion, threatening the young billionaire’s position as the world’s 13th richest person.

According to Meta, the company has been impacted by negative inflation forecasts, as well as the impact of global supply chain disruptions. Advertising agency budgets are not as plentiful as they always were, making Meta’s financial statements unsightly and confusing to investors.

Besides, Facebook’s growth momentum is also facing obstacles from other formidable competitors.

“People have a lot of choices for how they want to spend their time, and apps like TikTok are growing very quickly,” CEO Zuckerberg told AFP News.

The issue has not improved much after Facebook was caught up in the scandal of revealing user information, which shocked the community in 2018. Users have continued to strike out at Facebook since then. Large groups are late to respond to incorrect information. Facebook is slow to update its policies and is dealing with a growing number of infractions.

Users conclude that Facebook is no longer suitable for the community, especially when considering the impact of social networks on the young generation.

Calls to boycott

On the social network Twitter, users continuously post articles with content attacking Facebook, and use the hashtag #DeleteFacebook as a statement that they will leave the industry’s leading social networking platform. Users share account disablings, recall past scandals, condemn the current company’s direction, and state their personal views on how Mark Zuckerberg runs the system.

The vast majority of users share the same opinion, they do not want to use a platform capable of manipulating the news stream, have full control over what content users will see. Besides the painful fake news, Facebook users also face a series of uncontrolled hate speech.

Meta’s failing financial report made the online community gloating, continuing to rub salt in the wound with the hashtag #DeleteFacebook that has flooded social networks.

Things continue to get more serious when Mark Zuckerberg confronts the European Union (EU), threatening to pull Facebook and Instagram out of the Old Continent. The EU representative immediately responded vehemently: “Life would be much better without Facebook”.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems to have overestimated the influence of Facebook at the moment. Losing users for the first time in 18 years is a wake-up call to Meta and future projects.

Without users, the social networking platform will lose the diversity of a real society, and only extremist words will echo from the tongues of authoritarians.
